Musician Bio

Jaquain Sloan joins the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra for the 2026–27 season as Acting Contrabassoon/Utility Bassoon. Prior to joining the Indianapolis Symphony, he served in the same capacity with both the Utah Symphony and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. In addition to these appointments, he has performed with many of the nation’s leading ensembles, including The Philadelphia Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, San Francisco Symphony, Dallas Symphony Orchestra, and the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra.

Originally from North Carolina, Jaquain began his musical journey as a percussionist at the age of twelve before discovering the bassoon three years later. A largely self-taught musician in his early years, Jaqiain transferred to the University of North Carolina School of the Arts, where he studied with Saxton Rose during his senior year of High School. His artistic growth led to fellowships at both the Aspen Music Festival and the Brevard Music Center.

Jaquain earned a Bachelor of Music in Bassoon Performance from the Peabody Conservatory of the Johns Hopkins University, where he studied with Phillip Kolker. He went on to pursue a Master of Music degree and Performer’s Certificate from the University of Southern California under the guidance of Shawn Mouser.

Beyond the orchestra, Jaquain is an active choral musician and advocate for social justice. He has performed with the Grammy winning ensemble Tonality and the Los Angeles Choral Lab. He has also provided background vocals for artists including Björk, Phil Collins, Sigur Rós, and Kronos Quartet.
