My Orchestra
MYO develops musical skills and helps students realize their potential. Students learn to play in a fun, engaging, and challenging environment led by expert faculty with a long-term commitment to the learning process. Students form part of the MYO leadership team and a culture of support lays the foundation for life-skill development. Culturally responsive teaching is a key element, helping to build a space that’s respectful and inclusive.
By providing students in and around Indianapolis with opportunities for after school and weekend programming, the MYO helps to keep kids in school and encourages school engagement.
Learn more about the different MYO orchestrasMy Family
Families are strengthened by having intergenerational members play together. Parents have opportunities to rehearse and perform with the students through all orchestra levels, and are expected to participate with their students—both in lessons and orchestra—if possible. Over 200 families participate in the MYO each year.
Students are encouraged to create friendships and develop positive relationships as part of the program. In addition to rehearsals and performances, the MYO hosts regular social events, like weekly dinners and game nights. By fostering positive relationships, the MYO helps to increase the students’ motivation and participation while building new communities.
The MYO also provides opportunities for parents to socialize, build skills, and seek information about a variety of topics in our Just for Parents monthly workshop series.
"MYO is an opportunity to bond with my daughters through music, something that would not be afforded to me if I was not encouraged and able to play with them.”

My Future
Students are prepared for their futures by building their self-esteem and utilizing life-skills learned through rehearsal preparation and performances. MYO students strive for their personal best and envision a positive future, including the goals of staying in and graduating from high school and attending college or vocational school.
MYO students also have access to additional life-skill building resources, including:
- Professional Skill Building
- Résumé & Interview Workshops
- College Admission & Tours
- Financial Literacy Experience
- Peer Mentoring & Teaching
- College Preparation
"MYO is different from any orchestra because they build other life skills, like relationships, along with learning to play an instrument. MYO is such an amazing family to be a part of, and I am so glad I get to be a part of our MYO family.”
