Where are the best seats in the house?
This is a matter of personal preference. Seats on the main floor will get you closer to the Orchestra. When there is a piano soloist, some people prefer to sit on the auditorium’s left side to watch the pianist’s hands. When sitting in the Mezzanine, there is a better view of the entire stage, and sound travels very well to this area. For those reasons, some people prefer to sit in Dress Circle or First Mezzanine.
Can I access/print my tickets at home?
Yes! Access your mobile tickets through your ISO Account on a smart device or printed beforehand when you enter.
I left my ticket at home/lost my ticket. What do I do?
You can access all your tickets digitally through your ISO Account on any internet-ready device. Paper tickets will be available only upon request or due to operational necessity.
Where should I eat beforehand?
With the Hilbert Circle Theatre conveniently located in the heart of downtown Indianapolis, there are numerous options for dining before and after concerts.

Items purchased on-site may be consumed in the auditorium. Outside food and beverages are not allowed.
Who is the Concertmaster, and what do they do?
The Concertmaster will enter the stage just before the concert is to begin. They will walk to the center of the stage, and the audience applauds in recognition. The Concertmaster is the orchestra’s front person. They represent the group as a whole and sits in the first chair in the First Violin section. In January 2020, the ISO selected a new Concertmaster, Kevin Lin.
After the applause, the Concertmaster turns to the orchestra giving a signal to begin the tuning. The Concertmaster also receives acknowledgment from the conductor before the music begins. Symbolically, this acknowledges the orchestra.
About the tuning: The Concertmaster gives a signal to the principal oboe player to play an “A.” The wind instruments (woodwind and brass) sound first and play the note to check the pitch of their instruments. As a team, it’s important to have an orchestra in tune with each other.
When do I applaud?
Applause is held until after a complete composition and not given between movements. When in doubt, refer to your program and watch for the conductor to indicate the appropriate movement or wait until others applaud.
The conductor usually leaves the stage between pieces and will return to the stage to acknowledge continuous applause. If there is a soloist, the soloist will also leave the stage and re-enter with applause.
Is there an ATM inside the theatre?
There is no ATM inside the theatre, but credit cards are accepted at all food, drink, and merchandise stations. If you do need an ATM, the closest available is the Chase ATM located on East Market Street. Please note that all concession stands and bar sales are cashless.
