This summer, we are continuing one of our favorite traditions by bringing live orchestral music directly to neighborhoods across the city through Symphony in the Parks.
On July 14 at Ellenberger Park and July 15 at Garfield Park, audiences are invited to enjoy free outdoor performances led by Assistant Conductor Hannah Schendel. The programs are designed to delight first-time concertgoers and longtime music lovers alike.
For Schendel, these concerts are about much more than music.
“Concerts like these are special because they give us, the ISO, the opportunity to come directly to your community and share the joy of live orchestral music,” she said. “They also create a chance for people to connect with neighbors and friends through a shared musical experience. It’s about more than just the performance—it’s about bringing people together and celebrating the power of music to build community.”
This year’s program spans centuries of music, from beloved works by Beethoven and Tchaikovsky to unforgettable film scores from Harry Potter and Star Wars. That variety is one of the things Schendel is most excited to share.
“What excites me most is the wide variety of music on the program,” she said. “It’s also a wonderful preview of our upcoming season, so if you hear something that speaks to you, I hope you’ll come back and join us again.”
She hopes audiences will enjoy the journey through different musical worlds.
“We’ll journey from the timeless depth and emotion of composers like Beethoven and Tchaikovsky to the iconic film scores of Harry Potter and Star Wars,” Schendel said. “It’s a wonderful opportunity to experience different styles of musical storytelling in a single concert.
