The Performance
The Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra is honored to partner with the Sphinx Organization, a national nonprofit dedicated to developing young Black and Latinx classical musicians, to bring Sphinx artists and ISO musicians together. The ISO and Sphinx present a four-program annual series of chamber and orchestral music for the city of Indianapolis. Hosted at partner sites throughout the city, these performances highlight undiscovered, silenced, forgotten, contemporary, or cross-genre classical works.
The concert takes place on Sunday, March 15, at 2 p.m. at:
Sacred Heart Parish
1530 Union St., Indianapolis, IN 46225
Sacred Brass, Swinging Streets
Mark Grisez, trumpet
Daniel Lewis, trumpet
Kevin Newton, horn, Sphinx Guest Artist
Ryan Miller, trombone
Anthony Kniffen, tuba
From the soaring polyphony of Renaissance Venice to the infectious rhythms of American jazz and Latin dance, this vibrant brass program spans centuries of musical expression. Works by Giovanni Gabrieli and J.S. Bach anchor the concert’s classical roots, while music by Poulenc, Moncayo, Irving Berlin, and Alice Gomez brings color, swing, and rhythmic drive.
This performance is presented as part of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s partnership with the Sphinx Organization, whose mission is to transform lives through diversity in the arts. Featuring Sphinx Guest Artist Kevin Newton alongside ISO brass musicians, the concert celebrates both virtuosity and expanded representation, performed in the resonant acoustic of Sacred Heart Parish.
