Frequently Asked Questions
How do I apply?
You may apply online by filling out the application form here. Please provide a working email address that you check on a regular basis in order to receive email communication, newsletters, and schedule reminders.
Is there an age requirement?
Yes, all volunteers must be at least 18 years old to work on their own. Volunteers younger than 18 must be accompanied with a parent or guardian.
How often do I need to volunteer?
One of the many perks of volunteering with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra is you can decide how often and when you volunteer. Some volunteers join us each weekend, whereas some volunteers will volunteer a few times a year. The average volunteer will contribute their time once a month.
I have submitted my application. What's next?
You will hear from our Volunteer Services Manager within 48 business hours of submitting your application. We will help you through the next stages and tell you how to get yourself scheduled for your concert with our volunteer portal.
Do I have to attend training?
Yes. We offer usher training 4 times a year. If you cannot attend the next session, we provide an online video training and seating training at each of our concert meetings which take place on the concert night.
What is the uniform?
If you are volunteering at our downtown location, Hilbert Circle Theatre, the dress code is black pants or skirt, black comfortable shoes, and a white dress shirt. We provide all ushers with a blazer and name tag. For volunteer shifts at our summer venue, Conner Prairie, your uniform will be khaki pants with a white polo and comfortable shoes. We will provide you with a vest and name tag.
I'm sold! I want to volunteer but seating scares me. Will I be working on my own?
Not at all, we know volunteering for the first time can be daunting! We place all new volunteers with a seasoned volunteer to show you the ropes. We want you to have a great time volunteering with us. We also have experienced usher leadership at each concert to assist you. You’re in good hands!
Do you cover parking?
Yes, we do! We know parking downtown can get costly, so we offer free parking for volunteers at the Express Park Garage adjacent to the Hilbert Circle Theatre. On the night you volunteer, take a ticket as you enter the parking lot and bring it inside. Tickets will be validated on completion of your shift.
What other benefits do you offer?
Not only is volunteering beneficial to the ISO, it is beneficial to our volunteers. Benefits include:
- Complimentary tickets
- Invitations to exclusive events
- Free parking
- Special discounts and promotional offers
- Volunteer appreciation
- Being a part of a valued ISO family
How long does each volunteer shift last?
