Nancy Thomas and Betty Bogeman
Fans. Groupies. Die-hards.
All three descriptions could easily apply to Carmel residents, Nancy Thomas and Betty Bogeman. Nancy and Betty have been attending Symphony on the Prairie concerts since day one – June 5, 1982 (a landmark date in ISO history when 14 year-old child prodigy, Joshua Bell, made his debut with the ISO!).
“We remember the first several years of Symphony on the Prairie, when there was nothing but a large, wooden, portable stage set up at the bottom of the ‘bowl’ facing south,” recalled Nancy. “Of course, with increased attendance came a new, permanently covered stage facing east, tables and chairs, fireworks (YES!), food and drink stands and the wonderful smells of kettle corn.”
Over the years, Nancy and Betty formed friendships with familiar faces on stage and on staff. The duo’s fondest memories? “We love the ‘atmosphere’ of Symphony on the Prairie, with people bringing table settings, children dancing, watching the night darken with a full moon, and of course, hearing the beautiful music from the stage,” said Nancy.
Not only are Nancy and Betty faithful followers of Symphony on the Prairie concerts, they also give to the ISO’s annual fund. “We cannot imagine Indianapolis without our Symphony Orchestra or our lives without music,” they both remarked. “Purchasing tickets alone does not sustain an orchestra and that’s why we all must contribute to the Annual Fund.”
