A few weeks ago, our Development office received a significant check in the mail from someone with no giving history to the ISO. We reached out to the donor to set a meeting, to thank him personally for his contribution and to learn more about him. Upon meeting for coffee, we were surprised that 18 year-old James Adams was the donor in question! What would prompt an incoming freshman in college to give so significantly to the ISO?
“My experience with classical music didn't just start one day, it was a slow process that evolved with each new step, finally leading up to my decision to make it my profession. One of the most important influences, however, was being able to go to the symphony. There is nothing like experiencing music first hand. In recordings you don’t get to see the string section’s synchronized bows or the subtle dance of the oboist. As a composer, I get the chance to not only study how the music sounds, but also how the players react to the music. This is what gives music life. This is why I go to the ISO.”
James plans to study music composition and musicology at Indiana University in the fall. As a senior at Carmel High School last year, he attended 17 ISO performances and plans to be back for just as many concerts this coming season!
James’ words and actions inspire us! By the way, we also learned something else about James. He doesn’t drink coffee. He prefers hot chocolate.
