American Pianists Awards Concerto
Hilbert Circle Theatre
The American Pianists Awards are held every 2 years, alternating between classical and jazz, to discover the best aspiring young American pianists. The 2021 Awards format was altered in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Fortunately, the nomination process and the Selection Round were completed before the lockdown in March 2020 and the current roster of finalists chosen. The revised format, while far from ideal and substantially reduced, does indeed preserve the core elements of the traditional Awards format, and through the webcasts of all concerts, presents the finalists to a worldwide audience.
The competition culminates June 25-27, 2021, with chamber music performances with the Dover Quartet, concerto performances with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra under Maestro Gerard Schwarz, and a short solo performance before announcing the winner of the 2021 American Pianists Awards and the Christel DeHaan Classical Fellowship. These events are adjudicated in person and with limited-capacity audiences.
In addition to the $50,000 awarded to each finalist, the Awards Winner will receive the Christel DeHaan Classical Fellowship consisting of career assistance for two years, public relations through Bucklesweet Media, performance engagements worldwide, an Artist-in-Residence for two years at the University of Indianapolis, and an opportunity to record with Steinway & Sons record label.
