Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances

The music of Rachmaninoff has touched the heart for generations. Matthias Pintscher conducts the Russian master’s late, luxuriant Symphonic Dances, music that poignantly quotes nostalgic melodies from his early Vespers.

Behind the Curtain

with Associate Conductor Vince Lee

"Wesendonck was a poet, she and Wagner had a very intense relationship. She was married, he was married. It was one of those life connections, 'we should probably be together but the timing isn’t right.' There is no evidence of intimacy, but for the Wesendonck-Lieder, she wrote the poetry and he put the words to music. All of the angst and yearning that you hear is a great representation of their relationship. He wrote this piece while he was working on Tristan und Isolde.

Rachmaninoff's Symphonic Dances was the last piece he wrote, and features a big alto saxophone solo from the orchestra, which is a very distinctive sound. He composed that piece while living in Long Island–not a bad place to write some music!"

About Matthias Pintscher

Equally accomplished as conductor and composer, Pintscher sees his two main spheres of activity as entirely complementary; he has created significant works for the world’s leading orchestras, and his intrinsic understanding of the score from the composer’s perspective informs his ability to communicate on the podium.
