De Waart Conducts Beethoven's Eroica

Behind the Curtain

With Associate Conductor Vince lee

"Beethoven's 'Eroica' is one of the top twenty pieces in terms of popularity. A massive work, Beethoven’s longest symphony other than Symphony No. 9. It's called the 'Eroica,' which means heroic. He wrote the piece with Napoleon in mind, but when Napoleon declared himself emperor of everything, Beethoven was so angry that he scratched it out and dedicated it to someone else. For the rest of his life had very strong words against Napoleon."
