A native of St. Louis, MO, violinist Sarah Drake earned her Bachelor of Music and Performer’s Diploma from the Indiana University Jacobs School of Music, where she studied with Alexander Kerr and Henryk Kowalski. Before starting her one-year position with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra for the 2017-2018 season, Ms. Drake was performing extensively as an extra musician with the ensemble. Additionally, she has served as a substitute violinist for extended periods of time with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra and St. Louis Symphony, including a 2-month engagement with the Opera Theatre of St. Louis in 2015. Ms. Drake has also previously served in leadership positions in the IU Jacobs School of Music’s concert and chamber orchestras.
Ms. Drake comes from a long line of musicians. Her father currently serves as Assistant Principal Trumpet in the St. Louis Symphony, and her mother is a freelance cellist in the area. On her mother’s side, both grandparents are former flautists and met at the Juilliard School. Her grandfather then became a composer of contemporary and electronic music.
Outside of the orchestra, Ms. Drake is an avid reader, aspiring cook, and a lover of cats.
