From Boston, Massachusetts, violist Julia McLean is a one-year member of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra. She is also earning a Master of Music degree at The Juilliard School where she studies with Misha Amory. Julia performed as principal violist with the Verbier Festival Orchestra and in the New York String Orchestra’s 50th anniversary seminar. Other orchestras she has performed with include the Charleston Symphony, Boston Philharmonic Orchestra, Spoleto Festival USA Orchestra, and the New World Symphony. She was a fellow in the 75th anniversary season of the Music Academy of the West and also attended the Aspen Music Festival. Julia is a past prize winner in the Tufts Symphony Orchestra and New Philharmonia Concerto Competitions, and a finalist in the 2019 Juilliard Viola Concerto Competition. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Biopsychology from Tufts University while studying viola with Rictor Noren. She plays a 1988 Terry Borman viola on generous loan from the Doublestop Foundation. Outside of music, Julia is an artist with a continuing series of paintings on broken string instruments.
