With diabolic energy, Sergei Rachmaninoff’s last composition can be considered a modern day highlight reel. A musical testament saturated with allusions to his earlier music, Symphonic Dances quotes the catastrophic First Symphony and ends with a breathtaking setting of the Dies irae - a haunting 13th century Latin hymn and reoccurring musical obsession of Rachmaninoff’s.
